What are you sleeping on? By Abbie Heathcote

Do you know if it could be harmful to the environment and your health?

Until the fifties bedding was made from Kapok. This wonderful fibre was taken for granted and when the new synthetics came on the market we naively assumed that they were better because they were modern, and perhaps were cheaper, and everyone cheerfully threw out their old kapok bedding and embraced the new with delight. After all, it was advertised in those wonderful new glossy American Magazines and we all wanted to live like that in the fifties.
Extract from ‘Backyard. Nature and Culture in Suburban Australia’ by Lesley Head and Pat Muir

On a hill in an Australian suburb, a remnant stand of Eucalyptus maculata (spotted gum) affords a great view of Australia’s largest steelworks. Here live Lennie and Connie, their backyard dominated by an extensive and productive vegetable garden and chook shed that maintain traditions they brought from Italy more than forty years ago. On the other side of the hill lives Kris, who bought her house for the spotted gums in the backyard. She has been restoring the native vegetation since she moved in, removing the lawn, azaleas and geraniums that she refers to as ‘pests’. Kris is in varying levels of conflict with the neighbours on her three boundaries, each of whom has a different attitude to trees in general and natives in particular. Further down the hill, Mira describes her tidy backyard as being like a ‘small house’, which it is necessary to look after, clean and decorate. When Mira mows her lawn or feeds her roses she sees herself as loving and nurturing a backyard which is ‘everything in my heart’.

The Dalai Lama has appealed to China to enter into “meaningful dialogue” over the crisis in Tibet, and asserted he did not want to undermine the Beijing Olympics and was not seeking independence.
An Appeal to the Chinese People from His Holiness the 14th Dalai Lama
Food Derived from Cloned Animals

In January 2008, the US Food & Drug Administration (FDA) released it's final risk assessment report regarding food derived from cloned animals. Considering that it's only just over a decade ago that the first mammal (Dolly the Sheep) was cloned - I'd say they've got a hide saying there's no side effects from consuming clone-derived products. Read on and decide for yourself.
