| No Cash for the Climate Conscious: New Solar Laws a Fake |
Thursday, May 8, 2008: Environment groups, local government representatives, industry groups and the Electrical Trades Union protested this morning over the Brumby Government’s failure to introduce an effective solar feed-in law.
The Government has proposed that households with solar power would be paid 60 cents per kilowatt hour for electricity that they feed into the grid. However, this 60 cents will only be paid if households are exporting more energy than they are taking from the grid (known as a ‘net’ model). |

| Fewer cassowaries highlights need for greater habitat protection |
Estimates of cassowary numbers in the Wet Tropics areas of Australia may be much less than previously thought, putting the species at much greater risk from human activity in rainforests.
A recent study by local researcher Les Moore* suggests that population estimates of Cassowaries in Mission Beach and other surveys may have been overestimated by six times the real number because of small survey areas. |

Today both islands rely on generators, which burn imported diesel, and wind turbines for power generation but residents should be able to tap into wave and tidal current power by 2010.

| Calls for national solar feed-in tariff |
The federal opposition has called for a national solar payment to encourage more home owners to generate solar power. The Queensland and South Australian governments have approved such tariffs, which pay households above the retail rate for electricity generated by solar panels. Opposition environment spokesman Greg Hunt on Monday said a draft plan should be prepared for a national tariff which has a guaranteed rate of pay for solar electricity feedback into the grid. |

| Garrett deflects coal hijack claim |
ENVIRONMENT Minister Peter Garrett has defended the 2020 Summit amid accusations the climate debate was hijacked by the coal industry. Australian Conservation Foundation climate change manager Tony Mohr said: "There probably wasn't a strong enough voice for the 90 per cent of Australians really worried about climate change ... There weren't any really big ideas on climate change that could galvanise and inspire people." |
