From palazzo to permaculture
— part one —
Shani Graham and Tim Darby of Ecoburbia near Fremantle in WA, describe their fascinating ongoing project to turn an Italianate mansion into one of Australia’s leading urban eco-housing sites.
We used to live in Hulbert Street, a little cul-de-sac in South Fremantle. In a tiny sustainable house, with another property and B&B business in the same street, a 24 square metre vegie garden on a road verge, incredibly community-minded neighbours, and two goats, six chickens, assorted rabbits and a school of silver perch in the backyard. Did I mention it was three blocks from the beach?
So why move? Well, we had been making use of under utilised land to produce food and that left us in a rather precarious position.
